Khairy Believes Malaysia Can Win Gold Medals In SEA Games Sprint Events
Khairy said Malaysian athletes like Khairul Hafiz Jantan, Jonathan Nyepa and Badrul Hisyam Abdul Manap had the capability to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.
“This is a good sign for the SEA Games..we have a set of sprinters who will be involved in a healthy competition among them to improve their performances.
“I was informed that Jonathan Nyepa has been invited to join the other sprinters at Sekolah Sukan Tunku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI) in Bandar, especially for baton training in the 4x100m,” he told reporters here Sunday.
He was speaking to reporters after watching the men’s Malaysian Open 200m final which featured all three sprinters at the Universiti Malaya Mini Stadium, here today.
Khairul Hafiz representing Melaka won the gold with a time of 21.10s while G. Aravin Thevar from Armed Forces clocked 21.14s for the silver while Jonathan Nyepa from Sarawak came in third with a time of 21.18s.
Khairy said plans to send talented athletes abroad for training was still in the discussion stage but such a move was necessary to improve their performance so that they can match the rest in the SEA and Asian region.
“The emergence of young talent is very encouraging and we need to preserve such talent to be groomed for bigger challenges. United States is our main choice for grooming talent,” he said.
